Introduction to the Comprehensive Learner Record

What is Comprehensive Learner Record?

Educational institutions are increasingly recognizing that the historic academic transcript does not convey a complete picture of a learner’s achievements, particularly the learner’s skills, competencies, non-traditional learning experiences, and co-curricular accomplishments.

The Comprehensive Learner Record (CLR) specification is a standardized format for this new form of a verifiable and interoperable academic record designed to meet the needs of both institutions and learners.

What education scenarios are supported by the specification?

The CLR was designed for institutions, learners, and the emerging digital credentials ecosystem.

CLR was designed to support a variety of educational programs including competency-based education, experiential learning, badges, technical skills, employability skills (e.g. 21st Century skills, soft skills), and more

Who benefits?

Learners are the primary beneficiary of the Comprehensive Learner Record. Their CLR can now capture and communicate rich information about their learning achievements beyond course completions. With a CLR, learners can share an official verifiable digital record with admissions offices, graduate schools, prospective employers, or others.

Consumers of the CLR such as college admissions officers, HR staff and systems, and hiring managers benefit from gaining access to richer and verifiable information about learners’ skills, competencies, experiences, and achievements.

What problems are being solved?

Currently, academic transcripts and the information systems that produce them, are not designed to support the variety of learning experiences associated with competency-based education and co-curricular activities, among other experiences. Learners who wish to share these accomplishments must curate this information on their own and often without the official mark of the educational institution. The Comprehensive Learner Record standard will enable the market to develop innovative systems to store, display, and share this next generation of academic transcripts and data.

Does this update or replace one or more existing specifications?
