1EdTech Standards UpdateNothing comes close to the work of the 1EdTech Consortium community in terms of enabling the foundation for innovation in educational technology. With major milestones happening across all areas of the 1EdTech edtech ecosystem, hear about the latest progress and momentum with 1EdTech standards and get an overview of key technical activities for the upcoming year.

1EdTech Europe Panel: The Why, What and HowThe 1EdTech Europe Board was founded in 2017. Its purpose is to create awareness for 1EdTech and its standards in Europe, increase information about Europe within 1EdTech, and to get European 1EdTech member better involved with 1EdTech. The board contains 1EdTech members from Europe. In addition, there are two task forces. During this session, we will provide background on the work that the board and the task forces are doing as well as hear from European 1EdTech members that are active in the practical work of 1EdTech. |
Lightning TalksAll 1EdTech Europe members participating in the 1EdTech Europe Summit are invited to deliver a seven-minute Lighting Talk. The goal of these talks is for members to introduce themselves and their organization, and share how they are working with 1EdTech standards. How and where are the standards used? What are you looking to do next? Where can you contribute? By sharing this information, the European 1EdTech community will be better informed and more connected. |
LTI Advantage BootcampThis intensive two-day event is for registrants who want to gain practical knowledge of LTI v1.3 and LTI Advantage. Separate sign up is required at registration. This Bootcamp is suitable for participants who have plans to upgrade to LTI v1.3, have already started migrating, or are interested in understanding what is involved in the upgrade path. Come with your LTI tool(s) and/or platforms(s) and utilize 1EdTech resources to upgrade to LTI v1.3 with support from 1EdTech technical staff. If you are just starting down the path of creating a tool or platform, 1EdTech will guide you using an existing reference implementation to bootstrap this effort. Participants will have access to 1EdTech LTI Advantage development utilities to help institutions and suppliers transition to LTI Advantage. This is also a great opportunity to network with other developers, programmers, engineers, educational technologists, and anyone working to advance the LTI standard.

To maximize the outcome of the LTI Advantage Bootcamp, 1EdTech will offer two free, specialized topic mini-camps via remote conferencing prior to the 1EdTech Europe Summit. See the Getting Started and Making It Work webinar details for more information.
These brief 30-minute sessions will help establish baseline knowledge to get you started, address key changes in the LTI specification, and allow for maximum productivity at the Bootcamp. The mini-camps will be recorded for those unable to participate live. Your participation is highly recommended!

Accessibility ≠ Disability: Accessible Content is Better ContentThis session will extend the traditional definition of accessibility to universal design and how more accessible content can lead to higher quality, more usable content that can benefit all students.
We will provide insight into the current state of course content accessibility to show the trends and patterns across institutions, and highlight the challenges that still exist. We will also provide a summary of important recent legislative and policy changes in this area.
This session will conclude by providing a number of concrete hints and tips on how to easily create more accessible content and will highlight several opportunities on how accessibility can be incorporated better in 1EdTech standards.

1EdTech Standards and GDPR1EdTech members are leading the way to improved student privacy and security. 1EdTech recently released its new Security Framework to define a common approach for secure and private data exchange for all of its service definitions. This security framework is already being used in LTI Advantage, OneRoster, and other 1EdTech specifications. In Europe, the GDPR gives us guidelines on how to handle student privacy and security. In this session, we invited experts to share with us their ideas on the connection between the 1EdTech specifications and the GDPR and to discuss if the specifications are GDPR-proof. |
Leveraging 1EdTech Standards to Deliver (Accessible!) Content at ScaleHow do you prepare a platform to support 1,000,000 books being opened in a day, from anywhere on the globe? By leveraging 1EdTech standards to ensure an institution's ecosystem will interoperate and scale with the needs of learners to access their course materials anytime, from anywhere.
Join the VitalSource team in discussing how 1EdTech standards have enabled them to support users around the globe with highly accessible browser-based, and native app solutions. Providing access to content, insights into usage, early intervention warnings for at-risk students, returning gradable outcomes from interactions, and simplifying course setup is only possible by ensuring interoperability with LTI (and the upcoming LTI Advantage!), Caliper, and other 1EdTech standards in an institutions ecosystem.

What's New in QTI v3?The Question & Test Interoperability (QTI) standard was first introduced in 1999 and has evolved ever since. The first versions were more focused on exchanging semantics of item and test content, offering little support for presentation information (e.g. text markup and styling information). QTI 2.x improved in this area significantly by leveraging the W3C HTML and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) specifications, but there was still area left for improvement. QTI 3 takes the interoperability of rich, accessible assessment content to the next level; preserving presentation fidelity by use of Shared Vocabulary, allowing for greater accessibility by merging the Accessible Portable Item Protocol (APIP) standard, and integrating best practices on PCI (Portable Custom Interactions) and CAT (Computer Adaptive Testing). We'll tell you all about it in this session. |

OneRoster, LIS, EDU-API and OOAPI - Making it All Work in Europe1EdTech OneRoster is one of the most widely adopted and impactful edtech standards—used to securely and reliably exchange roster information, course materials, and grades between systems. Early this year, 1EdTech launched a new project called Edu-API to develop a set of student information system (SIS) APIs for higher education that can be coordinated with the OneRoster standard in K-12. SURF has pioneered using Open Education API (OOAPI) as a model for a Next Generation Digital Learning Environments (NGDLE). This session will discuss what we need to do to ensure that OneRoster and Edu-API meet European use cases and requirements. |
Deploying a Learning Analytics InfrastructureWith the progress in standards such as Caliper Analytics, large-scale learning analytics is slated to become more widely adopted over the coming years. In this session, we discuss the current learning analytics landscape. What are the recommended paths for those who want to deploy learning analytics today? What have early adopters found to be the most critical aspects to focus on when improving this technology for the future? And we will take a look at new avenues for research that Caliper data is opening up on student engagement, content quality and efficacy, tool quality and usage, course and program quality, and outcomes.

Digital Credentials and Open Badges 2.0Digital credentials are changing the way we think about and represent learning, competencies, and achievements inside and outside of the institution. Changing employment opportunities and work requirements mean that learners are pursuing higher education with a focus on improving their employability. Student mobility and lifelong learning mean that skills and competencies need to be represented in ways that transcend the boundaries of language and culture, for institutions as well as employers.
An increasing number of organizations are collaborating within 1EdTech to develop standards to facilitate the exchange of competency-based data and achievements via a secure, verifiable framework. Centered around Open Badges 2.0 (OBv2), a collection of standards and technologies is emerging to meet the requirements of modern education and employment.
This presentation will provide an overview of the evolving digital credentials landscape and the impact of 1EdTech standards including OBv2.

Caliper/xAPI Alignment: A Progress ReportThere exist two specifications for educational data interoperability, managed by two different standards organizations. Both the Caliper Analytics and xAPI specifications are attaining a reasonable level of maturity and are settling into use in a number of different use cases and venues. But a perceived contention between the two creates confusion: When should we use either? Which should vendors adopt and support? This session explores the values, virtues, and adoption of each standard, and proposes a rationale and framework to explore the feasibility and utility of aligning these specifications. |
New 1EdTech Standard for Computer-Aided ProctoringAs more institutions transition to digital assessment, improving interoperability of test delivery systems and tools that support functions such as invigilation (also called proctoring) is critical. Proctoring services might include controls such as a secure browser or use of the candidate’s screen that enables test candidates to take an assessment under a degree of supervision to ensure the security and integrity of the testing process. In this session, you will learn about the new 1EdTech Proctoring Services standard that 1EdTech members are collaborating to develop. |

Keynote: Getting practical with NGDLEA learning environment that offers the opportunity of integrating different components offers lecturers and students the freedom to choose which applications they want to use. Additionally, it makes it quick and easy for institutions to respond to innovation in education and try out new applications. SURF supports institutions in modernising their learning environments, and by doing so enables them to offer personalised, flexible education. For this, SURF—in collaboration with institutions—has created a framework for a future in which a flexible, personalised learning environment can be created. This framework has been piloted by institutions as well as vendors. This keynote will show how it's done and what we've learned. |
