The Italian Public Fund has launched a new project to recognise workers leaving temporary employment using digital credentials. This project is addressed to the thousands of employment agencies in Italy that provide requalification training to temporary workers.  

The objectives of this project are to introduce the electronic record as a personal database to keep together all the information related to people’s competencies, to standardize a model to represent people skills acquired through training and job experience, and to facilitate the match between supply and demand of skills.

In our lightning talk, we will share with you the impact that this project had on the lives and work of some of our clients, especially during COVID-19.

Future Creators and Real Ideas have been breaking new ground by applying a rigorous standard to writing badges to use in informal place based learning settings. They have used open badges in extra-curricular education settings, informal learning provision and employability work with young people. Rachel Carter, Deana Ward and Ed Hart will talk about some examples from their work in the Cities of Learning pilot projects in Brighton and Plymouth. They will show how badges have helped to highlight the crucial skills young people develop outside the classroom and the pathways this can set them on in their journeys to employment.

Why should our institution or company follow any digital credentials standard instead of creating something from scratch? This overall session will try to answer these questions. Besides, it will share some tips to know how to get up to speed on OB and CLR standards and make the right decision about when using them.

What is the value of selfie badges? - Slides - Recording

Most badges issued today are created by organisations to recognise badge earners for skills and competences that the badge creators value. This normative approach works for organisational contexts (talent and competence management and tracking, recruitment, certification, etc.) but it doesn’t work for recognising individual skills and achievements that employers haven’t anticipated. Let’s imagine that you’re an Open Badges expert. It’s highly improbable that you would find an existing “Open Badges Expert” badge that accurately describes your skills and achievements. So if you really want to be recognised for your particular expertise you should be able to claim it by creating your own “selfie badge” and have that claim validated. But what is the value and credibility of a selfie badge?

In our presentation we present the selfie badge functionality of Open Badge Passport and how our users have been using it. We also demonstrate how endorsements can make self-claimed badges highly valuable for both individuals and organisations.

Edubadges: issuing digital certificates, based on the Open Badges standard, to students in the Netherlands - Slides - Recording

Edubadges is the open source, digital certificates platform for the Dutch education community. Edubadges enable all Dutch higher education institutions to award students or workers with evidence of knowledge and skills they have acquired.

Students expect convenience and freedom of choice to study what they want, where they want, in their own time and at their own pace. Not just during their studies, but afterwards too. By issuing Edubadges we offer them the flexibility they are looking for. The Edubadges are linked to a new institution-wide identity, eduID, which will remain available after graduation and will last a lifetime.

In this presentation SURF will describe the national approach to use open badges in education and how the Edubadges service can make Dutch education more flexible and students and workers more mobile.

Extending and adopting Digital Credentialing standards - Slides - Recording

Standards are fundamental for Digital Credentials: they allow user empowerment (ownership, portability), digital transformation of processes, enable interoperability between educational institutions, and are essential to achieve the critical mass necessary to support new models for lifelong learning.

The Open Badges standard provides an extension mechanism to meet the specific needs of an issuer or a specific context. An example is the "projects" extension that is currently under development.
When dealing with use cases in different contexts, however, it is important to provide the user with the type of digital credential that best enhances his or her results or skills: the most suitable one based on the communication channel, context, or objectives (e.g. verification, recognition).

This lightning talk will describe a "multistandard" approach in which a "credential" can be assigned in the form of several "digital credentials" that rely on different standards.
